The Tree Of Life is Terrance Malick's first film in over six years; it tells the story of Jack, a man who's struggling to understand the meaning of life. Growing up in Waco, Texas in the 1950's, Jack finds himself looking back on his childhood years and his tumultuous relationship with his father.
Mr O'Brien loves his kids but struggles to balance his sense of paternal duty with the overwhelming love he has for his sons, as Jack and his brothers grow older they eventually loose their innocent childhood ways and develop a new streak of rebelliousness. Through self-reflection on his childhood situations, it helps Jack come to terms with everything that's happened in his life.
In 2011 The Tree Of Life won the Palme d'Or (the highest prize) at the Cannes Film Festival
