Biography

Orlando Bloom (DOB 13th January 1977) is an English actor who had his break-through role in the early 2000s as the elf-prince Legolas in The Lord of the Rings and blacksmith Will Turner in the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy of films. Since then he has established himself as a lead in Hollywood films, including Troy, Elizabethtown and Kingdom of Heaven.

He was not academic or athletic as a child, and managed to struggle through school despite his dyslexia. He then joined the National Youth Theatre, spending two seasons there and earning a scholarship to train at the British American Drama Academy.

Bloom began acting professionally with television roles in episodes of hospital drama Casualty and Midsummer Murders, and subsequently made his film debut in Wilde (1997).

Career: Bloom's first appearance on the screen was a small role as a rent boy in the 1997 film Wilde. Starring alongside Stephen Fry, the story of the life and times of Oscar Wilde was the first real break for Bloom.

Two days after graduating from Guildhall in 1999, he was cast in his first major role, playing Legolas in The Lord of the Rings (2001-2003). He had originally tried out for the part of Faramir, who doesn't appear until the second movie but the director, Peter Jackson, cast him as Legolas instead.

The success of the trilogy transformed Bloom from an unknown actor into one of world's best known celebrities.

In 2001 Bloom also appeared in Black Hawk Down, the story of the US Battle of Mogadishu amongst an all star cast including British actors Ewan McGregor, Jason Isaacs and Ioan Gruffudd.

Bloom next starred opposite Keira Knightley and Johnny Depp in highly popular and successful Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, which was a blockbuster hit during the summer of 2003.

After the success of Pirates, Bloom next took to the screen as Paris, the man who effectively started the Trojan War, in the 2004 Spring blockbuster, Troy opposite Brad Pitt and Peter O'Toole.

He subsequently played the lead roles in Kingdom of Heaven and Elizabethtown (both 2005). In 2006, Bloom starred in sequel Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, and the independently made Haven, for which he was executive producer.

As of May 2007 and at the ago of just 30, Orlando Bloom has appeared in four of the top 15 highest grossing films of all time.

Bloom, who had intended to become a stage actor after graduating, had stated that he would like to leave films for a time and instead appear in stage roles.

So during the summer of 2007, he appeared in a London revival of 'In Celebration', a play by David Storey

Coming in 2009, Orlando Bloom will be one of many stars to be in 'New York, I Love You', which contains twelve short films in one, each having a similar romantic theme. Also featuring the likes of John Hurt, Natalie Portman and Christina Ricci, the film is already attracting a lot of interest.

Personal life: In 1998, he fell three stories while trying to reach the roof of terrace of a friend's house, and was told he would not regain the ability to walk. However, he made a recovery and was able to walk out of the hospital on crutches within twelve days.

Bloom had steel plates inserted into his backbone to support it, which have since been removed, except for a single screw.

Bloom has also been a part of Global Green, an environmental company, since the early 2000s. As part of his environmental involvement, he has renovated his London home to use solar panels, incorporate recycled materials, and utilize energy efficient lightbulbs. Bloom has been approached by UNICEF to act as an international ambassador.

Bloom has a tattoo of the Elvish word "nine" on his right wrist, written in the Tengwar script, a reference to his involvement in the Lord of the Rings and the fact that his character was one of the nine members of the Fellowship of the Ring. The other actors of "The Fellowship" (Sean Astin, Sean Bean, Billy Boyd, Ian McKellen, Dominic Monaghan, Viggo Mortensen, and Elijah Wood) got the same tattoo with the exception of John Rhys-Davies whose stunt double got the tattoo instead.

Bloom also has a tattoo of a sun on his lower, left abdomen, which he got at the age of 16 after moving to London.

Bloom is a practising Buddhist.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Review

Weak

Subtitled Salazar's Revenge in the UK, this fifth film in the long-running series never quite gets its sea legs. With a waterlogged script and a startlingly murky production design, this is the first movie in the franchise that lacks a sense of swashbuckling merriment. It's lively enough to keep the audience watching, but it never quite makes any sense because any sensible details are lost amid the chaotic action sequences.

It opens with Henry (Brenton Thwaites), son of franchise veterans Will and Elizabeth (Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley in cameos), who is on a quest to free his father from his watery imprisonment. For this he needs Poseidon's trident, which only Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) can find with his magical compass. Except that Jack has swapped the compass to buy some whiskey. Then Will meets the feisty Carina (Kaya Scodelario), who's star-reading skills will come in handy. But the vengeful Salazar (Javier Bardem) is also after the compass and the trident, hoping to reverse his own ghostly curse. And as things heat up, Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) dives into the pursuit as well.

What follows is a series of set-pieces in which these various factions scuffle for control of people and artefacts that can lead them in their quests for power. They all talk incessantly about the elaborately complex mythology, but it never makes any sense why each person knows only fragments of the lore. And it's also not easy to hear what they're shouting amid the general chaos of yet another epically choreographed fight scene. Thankfully, the actors are hammy enough to stand out from the sea of digital effects that fill the screen.

Orlando Bloom Insists That Kids Will Always Love Pirates

Orlando Bloom

There was nothing original about the concept of pirates when 'Pirates of the Caribbean' came along in 2003 with Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom, but there was something about how Disney put across this story that made it adored by adults and children alike - and, indeed, turned 'pirate movie' into an unmatched genre.

Good

By injecting a steady sense of fun, this slick but mindless action thriller both holds the attention and keeps the audience entertained, even when things get very silly indeed. And because of the tone, the starry actors get the chance to add quirky angles to their characters that remind us to avoid taking anything that happens too seriously. The terrorism plot may strain to be topical and relevant, but it's the corny plotting and lively banter that keeps a smile on our faces.

It's set in London, where former CIA operative Alice (Noomi Rapace) is trying to have a quiet life working with migrants. When one of these, Lateef (Aymen Hamdouchi), appears to be a jihadist planning an attack, she shifts into action mode, consulting her mentor (Michael Douglas) and her MI5 contact (Toni Collette). Then things take a turn, sending her on the run with a shifty ex-marine (Orlando Bloom). With Alice seen as a rogue agent, the American CIA chief (John Malkovich) joins in the hunt. But she's actually the only person who knows the truth: the Muslims are trying to stop a murderous attack that's being orchestrated by someone inside the agency.

Veteran director Michael Apted keeps things moving so briskly that the audience never has much time to worry about the nonsensical details that are flung around in each conversation. The film is a riot of conspiracies, betrayals, codewords, revelations and ticking time bombs, none of which make much sense, but it's a lot of fun to watch a woman taking charge for once. Rapace makes a terrific action hero, tough and sympathetic while still maintaining a sense of mystery.

Panic is afoot when it becomes clear that Captain Salazar has escaped his eternal torment at the bottom of the Devil's Triangle, and as much as Jack loves an adventure almost as much as he loves rum, this time he could truly be out of his depth. It will take more than his trusty compass to help him this time, but thankfully he has the help of a new headstrong maiden named Carina Smyth who happens to be a skilled astronomer, plus the return of his old friend Will Turner. Together they must uncover the Trident of Poseidon before Salazar does, and send the enemy back to their watery graves.
