What to Expect When You're Expecting is a comic adaptation of the New York Times' bestselling pregnancy advice book of the same name. The film centres around five couples whose lives are turned upside down when they learn of their forthcoming parenthood. Whilst Jules and Evan (a fitness guru and a dance show star, respectively) struggle to fit the demands of pregnancy into a busy showbiz lifestyle, the author Wendy finds herself in a spin when her body is held hostage by her rampant pregnancy hormones. Meanwhile, Wendy's husband Gary finds himself competing with his own father, who is expecting twins with his much-younger partner Skyler.
Alex feels the need to join a 'dudes' support group to quell his anxiety as his partner Holly insists they travel the globe in the search for a child to adopt. And a bizarre situation befalls Rosie and Marco, as the arrival of their first pregnancy somehow happens before their first date. These comic tales intertwine as the filmmakers provide a humorous take on what to expect when you are pregnant.
The film's director, Kirk Jones has worked on a number of high profile comedy films, such as Everybody's Fine, Nanny McPhee and Waking Ned. The production team consists of Mike Medavoy, Arnold W. Messer and David Thwaites, all three of whom previously worked on the Oscar-nominated movie Black Swan as well as 2010's Shanghai. The screenplay is written by Shauna Cross (Whip It), Heather Hach (Freaky Friday, Legally Blonde: The Musical) and Heidi Murkoff, the writer of the original book series.
