Single mom Grace struggles to be there for her adolescent daughter Ansiedad while she manages her bills, work and her affair with a married man, Dr. Hartford. Ansiedad is inspired by her English teacher Ms. Armstrong to run away from home and start life without her mom after discussing the topic of coming-of-age stories in class. With a little help from best friend Tavita, she makes plans to start her life as an adult while Grace is too busy becoming increasingly distracted by the affections of her co-worker to notice.
A true coming-of-age story in itself, Girl in Progress presents a moral fable about growing up and the definitions of "adulthood". The film places strong emphasis on the importance of family, no matter how small. It is tearfully touching but with enough comic relief to make it a wonderfully emotional and heart-warming film to see.
Eva Mendes plays the leas role of Grace (Hitch, Once Upon a Time in Mexico) and Cierra Ramirez as Ansiedad (The Suite Life of Zack and Cody), this dramatic comedy is sure to inspire every female - young or old - as the story brings about its resolution: that growing up is not about trying to act older.
