Bernie Tiede is a local mortician in a small town in Texas. He is a friendly, charming man who is liked by all the residents in the community - except for one. Marjorie Nugent is an elderly, bitter millionaire who isn't a people person. Many of the older residents in the town have clear memories of Marjorie being mean towards them.
Bernie, firmly believing that Marjorie has a small amount of good in her, keeps trying to befriend her. He insists to anyone who is sceptical that she is lonely and just needs someone to talk to. Bernie succeeds and Marjorie begins opening up to him.
Soon, the pair are doing all sorts of activities - going to the hair salon; even embarking on lavish holidays to Russia; Acapulco and New York, flying first class every time. Bernie even starts purchasing expensive items for himself, much to the disbelief of the residents.
But the luxury lifestyle was soon marred by Marjorie's constant put downs towards an increasingly upset Bernie. One night, he sees the rifle in her garage and has an idea.
Despite the residents' defence that Bernie was an angel who would never hurt anyone, let alone murder an elderly woman like Marjorie, the local attorney, Danny Buck Davidson, isn't so sure. He starts an investigation to prove that Bernie was the killer of Majorie. Will he find enough evidence to support his suspicions?
