Newlywed Meris is in seventh heaven after marrying Mitch and she's working hard to make their marriage work. When Mitch is offered a job in his hometown of Portland, Oregon, Meris encourages him to take it and follows him to Portland.

No sooner have they relocated when Mitch reunites with his high school friends, who invite him to a house party, along with their wives. Mitch and Meris go along, despite Meris being socially awkward. She does not get along with the ladies, who are all very snobbish and rude.

Mitch and Meris' marriage starts to deteriorate, with the final straw coming when Meris catches Mitch in the arms of his former flame, Briann. A distraught Meris files for divorce and takes up a job in a candy store, where she befriends her colleague, Trudy. Meris slowly begins to shed her old skin and reinvents herself as a punk rocker, much to the surprise of Mitch, her now ex-husband.
