After the traumatic events of the First World War, many devastated people are turning to the supernatural, in particular, the ghosts of loved ones. Unfortunately, many of the grief stricken are being conned by swindlers looking to make quick money. Florence Cathcart is a woman who exposes these frauds for what they really are. Her book on the subject is a bestseller, making her well known all over the country.
Florence is sought after by Robert Mallory, a history master at a boy's boarding school, where it is supposedly haunted by the young victim of a shocking murder that took place several years ago. The sceptical Florence agrees and shortly arrives at the school, where she will stay while debunking the rumours.
A few students have claimed to have seen the ghost; however, Florence and the also sceptical housemaid Maud are determined to prove the students and teachers wrong. But then an unsettling sight leaves the once calm Florence asking herself if ghosts really do exist.
