Star Trek Into Darkness was universally praised by critics and is the most commercially successful film in the entire series, in terms of the box-office. Well, that's all well and good, only...Star Trek fans didn't really like it that much.

At this weekend's annual Star Trek convention in Las Vegas, the Jj Abrams-helmed sequel - lauded for its cinematography, strong performances and action scenes -  was voted the worst Star Trek movie of the entire canon by avid Trekkies.

As if to rub salt into the wound, fans voted that Into Darkness is worse than Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, the 1989 film directed by William Shatner that's not only maligned in Trek circles but generally considered one of the worst movies of all time. It was also beaten by sci-spoof Galaxy Quest (not really a Star Trek movie), though Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan was deemed to be the best of the series.

Though Into Darkness is clearly a decent flick in its own right, the poll confirms that Abrams' big-budget blockbuster has completely alienated the hardcore Star Trek audience that has followed the show through its various incarnations.

Reporting from the convention, blogger Devin Faraci of Badass Digest wrote: "Star Trek Into Darkness was met with boos when it was mentioned, and one guy took the mic to say these reboots shouldn't even be considered for a list of Star Trek movies." What, and Galaxy Quest should?

Abrams was a controversial choice to helm the Star Trek reboots anyway, though his decision to direct Disney's forthcoming Star Wars movie, Episode VIII, left Trek fans sharpening their knives. Given Abrams schedule, it is rumored that the next Star Trek movie could be helmed by an alternative director though is still being written by Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman - the scribes behind 2009's Star Trek.
