Meanwhile, Dawn is working hard being everyone’s assistant, but things hit the fan when Sally comes in the office to see her father after losing her purse in the city. Her roommate's mother had died, and she and two classmates used the funeral as an excuse to do some shopping -- or so she says. But when she comes in, everything is wrong – Lou Avery is in her father’s office and his name is on the door. Awkward… when Dawn returns from photocopying duty, it all crashes down on her – and by all we mean Avery’s anger. He rips into her for letting Sally in and requests that Joan shift things around so that he can have a new assistant. Why, Cooper, why? Sally continues her search for Don at his apartment, but there’s noone there – apart from a couple of roaches, of course. Don is out having lunch with a buddy from a rival agency, fishing around for a better offer and checking to see if anyone heard about his utter and complete meltdown last season. Peggy and Shirley have some more floral disagreements, during which Shirley finally tells her boss that the flowers weren’t really meant for her. At which point Peggy proceeds to be an awful person (hey, she’s allowed a couple slipups too) and yells at Shirley for “embarrassing” her. It’s a nice place to leave the story, although Don’s relationship with his daughter is far from healed after the infamous Sylvia incident. When Don finally drops Sally off at school, she says the words that he must have feared he would never from her again: "Happy Valentine's Day. I love you."
