Kathy H is now a grown woman, she spent her childhood at a special year-round mixed boarding school; that is where she met her best friends Ruth and Tommy. As children the small group of friends were inseparable unlike most of the distant and cold kids at Hailsham Boarding school.
From a young age the children were told they were special but never really informed the full extent of their purpose. As they grow into teenagers they're given more freedom from the confines of the school and Ruth and Tommy develop a relationship leaving Kathy looking on, feeling more and more distant from the couple - and secretly wishing she was the one Tommy had fallen for - Ruth decides to make a move from the cottage they shared. The ex-students are now aware of their purpose and what their life will bring but to fulfil their intended use will mean having to leave everything and everyone behind. Knowing what awaits them is something they all find hard to deal with, looking back rather than forward is the best way to deal with their future.
