When Chris packs up for the weekend to go and meet his girlfriend Rose's family for the first time, his biggest concern is that they might not approve of him being a black man. Thankfully, they seem to be accepting, but he's slightly disturbed by a pair of strange black housekeepers that live there named Georgina and Walter. When his pal back home discovers that black people have been going missing from the area for years, he tries to brush it off in order to get through the weekend, but he can ignore it no longer when one of the missing people shows up at a garden party on the estate looking particularly disturbed and warning him to 'get out'. Miles Ahead Trailer

Miles Davis' music made him a household name, loved by millions around the world, yet not many people know what the real Miles was like. The story of the man behind the Jazz - sorry 'social' music. When music journalist Dave Braden turns up at Davis' house unannounced looking to speak with the musician about his new material, he's obviously shocked.

As Miles eventually warms to the Rolling Stone writer, the two find themselves on a quest neither ever thought they'd undertake. Miles realises that his new and unreleased material has been stolen - they must identify and track down the thief in order to return the demos to their rightful home.

Cheadle said of the project: "To make an entertaining, "rock and roll" movie about a multi-talented musician in a non-traditional, subversive way. To attempt to DO Miles Davis rather than simply chronicle the highlights and lowlights of his life. That process felt like Miles to me."

Short Term 12 Review

Excellent

Documentary-style authenticity gives this understated drama a real kick as it explores the fallout of child abuse from an angle we'd never expect. But this isn't the usual devastatingly gloomy approach, as filmmaker Cretton creates people and situations that are so honest that we have no trouble identifying with them. And he remains realistic and hopeful about the future.

The story centres on Grace (Larson), a counsellor at a short-term group home for at-risk teens. She's secretly in a relationship with her colleague Mason (Gallagher), and has a shock when she learns that she's pregnant. The real surprise is how this news dredges up memories of her own troubled childhood. But she doesn't have much time to take care of herself, because she, Mason and their coworkers (Malek and Beatriz) have a variety of kids who need their help. These include Marcus (Stanfield), who's about to turn 18 and move out on his own, and new arrival Jayden (Dever), who keeps trying to run away to see her abusive father.

Writer-director Cretton reveals Grace's personal history only as she's willing to face it herself. This allows Larson to deliver a remarkably transparent performance, as we see her confronting things she won't admit to herself. Her scenes with Gallagher are packed with jagged emotion as all of these issues swell up around them. And we can see that Mason's past in much more stable foster homes has given him more tools to handle these things.
