Princess Merida is the daughter of the warrior, King Fergus and his wife, Queen Elinor. She is also the eldest of four; she has three younger brothers, Hamish; Hubert and Harris, who are a set of triplets. Being part of the royal family means she has to sit and watch a Scottish tradition: the first born son showcasing his archery.
One particular day, Merida is bored by proceedings; she proceeds to crack jokes with her father while Elinor looks on, disapproving. One such archer prompts Fergus to turn to Merida with his own joke - but she has vanished from her seat. A second later, the crowd looks in shock as Merida takes her turn shooting, hitting the bulls eye every single time.
No one in the kingdom is happy about Merida and her talent at archery. In their kingdom, girls should learn to look glamorous. Word quickly spreads at how Merida would sneak off into the woods to practise shooting.
Merida finds herself becoming increasingly isolated and she turns to a witch for help. She grants Merida a wish, which has disastrous consequences on the kingdom. Merida must use her archery skills and the resources she has to remove a curse which has been placed on the kingdom, before it's too late.
