In the 1950's mental patients were incarcerated in some of the worst hospitals. The mental institution on Shutter Island held the majority of America's criminally insane. When two federal marshals are sent to the island to investigate the disappearance of an inmate, they're unsure what they will be faced with. Forced to surrender their weapons on entry, they marshals begin their investigation under the supervision of the hospital's chief administrator; it soon becomes clear that they haven't been given a full story of what happened to the missing patient. When bad weather cuts all ties with the outside world, the law officials must stay on the island until it's safe to leave, however it seems there's a greater danger than the weather threatening their lives.
