The actor Luke Bracey has won the battle to play FBI agent Johnny Utah in the reboot of Kathryn Bigelow's classic 1991 movie Point Break. The role was originally played by Keanu Reeves. In the new movie directed by Ericson Core, the late Patrick Swayze's role Bodhi will be taken by Gerard Butler. Variety has the scoop on this one.

The remake will retain the original 'surfing thriller' story of an FBI agent infiltrating a ring of criminals, however, it will be set in the world of extreme sports.

Bracey - probably best known for G.I. Joe Retaliation - fended off competition from a string of actors for the role, including Fifty Shades of Grey's Like Grimes who also screen-tested. Alcon had originally eyed Garrett Hedlund and Nicholas Hoult for the lead but instead plumped for the up-and-comer instead of the established star.

Alcon's Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove are producing Point Break, along with John Baldecchi and Chris Taylor.

Before Point Break, Bracey will star in the romantic-drama The Best of Me with True Detective's Michelle Monaghan.

He also has a role in the Pierce Brosnan action-thriller November Man, about an ex-CIA operative who is "brought back in" on a personal mission that pits him against his former pupil in a deadly game.

The original Point Break was a huge box-office success, grossing over $80 million, though gathered a worldwide cult following its release on VHS and later, DVD.
