In possibly the most predictable story of all time, Martin Bashir has resigned from MSNBC over comments he made about Sarah Palin. The only other way this could have gone was a sacking, but something tells us this resignation wasn’t all one way.

Martin Bashir

"Martin is a good man and respected colleague - we wish him only the best," MSNBC president Phil Griffin wrote in a statement, announcing the decision for Bashir to down tools. Mr Bashir apparently offered his resignation after a meeting with Mr Griffin and upon "further reflection" of his remarks."

"It is my sincere hope that all of my colleagues... will be allowed to focus on the issues that matter without the distraction of myself," he wrote. "I deeply regret what was said, will endeavour to work hard at making constructive contributions in the future and will always have a deep appreciation for our viewers."

The offending comments were made on 15 November, but were warmly received by a large portion of MSNBC’s demographic. Unfortunately, you can’t air personal views of that nature in the realm of global journalism – Bashir had to go. Perhaps he’ll land on a satirical news show where it’s okay to tell prominent politicians to eat faeces?

Oh yeah, the actual comments.

They were: "America's resident dunce Sarah Palin scraping the barrel of her long-deceased mind and using her all-time favourite analogy in an attempt to sound intelligent about the national debt.

"Given her well-established reputation as a world-class idiot, it's hardly surprising that she should choose to mention slavery in a way that is abominable to anyone who knows anything about its abominable history." Then came the eating faeces bit; something Bashir described as a punishment for wayward slaves.

All the best Bashir.
