News that Miley Cyrus is set to team up with The Flaming Lips and Andrew from MGMT to record a cover of The Beatles “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” wasn’t exactly received with a wave of enthusiasm. One Beatles fan replied to The Flaming Lips’ frontman Wayne Coyne’s Instagram announcement by saying “Sorry if I don’t want a washed-up Pink Floyd tribute band, and Hannah Montana, ruining one of the greatest songs of all time.”

miley cyrus cover songsMiley's impending Beatles cover is not eagerly awaited

Outraged Beatles fans may be jumping the gun a little, as we haven’t heard what the track even sounds like yet. However, these songs have been released and we can safely agree that they have produced some of the worst song covers of all time, most of them bordering on outright offensive.

Miley’s not the only singer to attempt covering the iconic Beatles tune. In 1967 William Shatner released his debut album, which included his own version of “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”, recorded in a voice he interprets to represent someone who is tripping out on hallucinogenic drugs. Pretty avant-garde, yes, pleasant to listen to...no.

Watch Miley Cyrus praising Sinead O'Connor:

Britney Spears is a repeat offender when it comes to recording bad cover songs. Her cover of Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock & Roll” is the least rock and roll song of all time and when asked why she chose to record the song, Brit replied, “Because I love Pat Benatar.” Don’t we all, don’t we all. Although that bears little relation to the question.

We take back saying that Britney’s cover of “I Love Rock & Roll” is the least rock and roll song ever, because her cover of The Rolling Stone’s “Satisfaction” actually deserves that title. Take note, bubblegum pop stars, never, ever release your own versions of iconic rock songs, it’s too embarrassing for everyone.

Which brings us to Miley Cyrus again, who covered Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” at a gig in Rio. Cyrus claimed “Without [Nirvana] I wouldn’t be here. They are the ones who gave me the strength and courage to do this.” Kurt Cobain must be spinning in his grave.

Madonna’s dance remix/cover of Don McLean’s classic rock song “American Pie” is a, for lack of a better description, an abomination upon the ears. She should be fined for taking such an epochal tune and distorting it into something so thoroughly mediocre.

jessica simpson cover songJessica Simpson recorded her cover before she became the face of Weight Watchers

Clearly not content with being the only teeny bopper star not to butcher a classic, Jessica Simpson decided to don a pair of Daisy Dukes and record her exceptionally beige version of “These Boots Are Made For Walkin’” in the mid-00’s. More than anything the cover was designed for Jessica to be able to strip down to a bikini in the video and wash a car, which is totally in keeping with the theme of the song.
