Miley Cyrus didn't win any awards at Sunday night's MTV music video awards ceremony in Brooklyn and she was just one of loads of performers helping raise the roof at the annual celebration of musical artistry. However, her performance - of her No.1 hit 'We Can't Stop' and 'Blurred Lines' with Robin Thicke - helped secure Miley as the most talked about live act of the night.

It wasn't her music per say; by now we're used to her post-Hannah Montana drawl and themes of entitled hedonism. Rather it was her outfits, dancing and facial expression that provoked a roomful of eye-popping and jaw-dropping. She emerged from the chest of a giant bear and without a moment's pause, began to grind and twerk before entering into a rendition of 'We Can't Stop' whilst the 'bear-people' - as seen in the track's eyebrow-raising video - bobbed about whilst being twerked on by Miley.

Although she emerged wearing a sort-of bodice with a bears face on it, the piece was ripped off to reveal a latex bikini as R&B singer Robin Thicke, resplendent in a humbug pinstriped suit, strutted out to perform 'Blurred Lines. Miley's crotch was thrust repeatedly towards the camera and by the end of her act, we are almost as acquainted with her omnipresent lolling tongue than the former Disney star herself.

Actor Will Smith's children, Willow and Jaden, were amongst the more impressionable members of the VMAs audience and their facial expressions when Miley's dance routine was in full swing are priceless. Jaden's face delivers a mixture of revolted and scarred for life whilst his younger sister's jaw couldn't get further to the floor if she tried. Even their dad looked like he'd just seen his Granny pull a strip routine.

The Smith family weren't the only ones to reel in shock during Miley's raunchy routine: Twitter became ablaze with messages of horror, revulsion and admiration as the former Disney sweetheart's provocative transformation proved a tough pill to swallow for many. Amidst lengthier tweets deriding Miley's distasteful display, one user simply wrote "Miley Cyrus that was disturbing," but some congratulated Miley for having the confidence to pull off such a performance in front of millions.
