Filmmaker, Justin Lin, is set to direct the next 'Bourne' instalment.

The 42 year-old is the mastermind behind one of cinema's most successful film franchises, 'Fast & Furious'.

Deadline reported, Lin will now direct the 5th instalment of the spy film series which now stars Jeremy Renner as the main protagonist.

Renner will reprise his role of 'Aaron Cross' as he continues his journey from 2012's 'Bourne Legacy'. The upcoming story will be penned by 'Invictus' and 'Sherlock Holmes' writer, Anthony Peckham.

Lin left the car racing franchise with big shoes to fill as the last three films combined to gross a whopping $1 billion, his successor is the director of 'Insidious', James Wan.

Universal Picture will hope Lin can pull off yet another worldwide success and revive the 'Bourne' franchise to the level of 'Fast & Furious'.

The spy series', which first starred Matt Damon as 'Jason Bourne', last instalment grossed a worldwide sum of $276 million, Lin's 2011 film 'Fast Five' eclipsed that total with a staggering $626 million worldwide. It kept on improving as his last film, 'Fast & Furious 6', garnered $788 million worldwide.

The report also states a summer 2015 release date could be in the works even though the studio hasn't yet confirmed when it will open.

Universal is very busy with sequels lately as it is working on new instalments for 'The mummy' franchise as well as a 'Jurassic Park' film. 'Fast & Furious 7' is currently being filmed and the main cast which includes, Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson, are all reprising their roles.
