Michelle Shocked was certainly handing out a fair dose of her surname to attendees of a recent concert put on by the country star, after she launched into an astonishing anti-gay rant on stage.

The singer was performing in San Francisco on Sunday night (March 17, 2013) and began to tell stunned onlookers her thoughts on Proposition 8, which California is hoping to push through to allow gay marriage to become legal. Speaking in between songs, she commented "When they stop Prop 8 and force priests at gunpoint to marry gays, it will be the downfall of civilization, and Jesus will come back.” Continuing she added "You are going to leave here and tell people, 'Michelle Shocked said God hates faggots.'"

Unsurprisingly folks weren’t too happy about this and many people walked out, while the venue – Yoshi’s – attempted to end the show. Shocked nevertheless carried on playing until venue staff pulled the plug and turned off the stage lights. Shocked has always had strong opinions, and it was that which helped elevate her to stardom in the 80’s and 90’s. She’s broached the topic of homosexuality in public before too, telling the Dallas Voice in a 2008 interview "According to my Bible, which I didn't write, homosexuality is immoral. But homosexuality is no more less a sin than fornication. And I'm a fornicator with a capital F."

Shocked was scheduled to perform at SPACE in Evanston, Illinois, on May 5, though promoters have now cancelled the show, writing on Facebook, "Many of you have reached out already following an ugly rant given by Michelle Shocked at her show in San Francisco last night. After speaking with the promoter of that show about the nature of the remarks, it's clear that this is no longer a show we're willing to put our name on. The May 5th performance at SPACE has been cancelled and refunds will be issued at point of purchase."
