Singer Michelle Shocked's upcoming US performances have been scrapped following her bizarre onstage anti-gay marriage rant.
Michelle Shocked has angered fans with her anti-gay rant.
The singer-songwriter - who is a born-again Christian - left the audience speechless at her show in San Fransisco on Sunday night (17.03.13) when she launched into a homophobic tirade about gay marriage, forcing her gig to be cut short and prompting several other venues to cancel her upcoming performances.
Citing Proposition 8, California's legal definition of marriage being a union between a woman and a man, she claimed same-sex unions would be the ''downfall'' of the human race.
She told the crowd - many of whom stormed out of the show - at Yoshi's in San Francisco: ''When they stop Prop 8 and force priests at gunpoint to marry gays, it will be the downfall of civilisation, and Jesus will come back.
''You are going to leave here and tell people, 'Michelle Shocked said God hates faggots.' ''
Michelle, 51, attempted to continue playing until the club manager ordered staff to pull the plug and turned off the stage lights. Venues in Illinois, California, Oregon and Colorado have now scrapped forthcoming shows.
Outraged fans took to Twitter to complain, with @anile02 ranting: ''She said gay marriage would cause the end of the world'', while @lisahubbert agreed: ''She's a total bigot and said so on stage''.
The alternative musician is yet to issue an apology, but tweeted: ''Truth is leading to painful confrontation.''
Michelle hasn't always been so right-wing, and formerly confessed she was struggling to adjust with ''bigotry'' in the Christian Church.
She said: ''According to my Bible, which I didn't write, homosexuality is immoral. But homosexuality is no more less a sin than fornication. And I'm a fornicator with a capital F.''
