The Pirate Bay's admission that it had accepted an invitation from the leader of North Korea to route traffic to its cloud server from that country appears to have been a ruse. On Monday, a Pirate Bay insider told TorrentFreak.com, which tracks all things related to BitTorrent file sharing, We've been in talks with them [North Korea] for about two weeks, since they opened access for foreigners to use 3G in the country. ... TPB has been invited just like Eric Schmidt and Dennis Rodman. The insider described North Korea as a country opening up and one thing is sure, they do not care about threats like others do. In that way, TPB and Korea might have a special bond. While it all sounded legitimate to TorrentFreak, it cautioned, Keep in mind that the Pirate Bay is known for its satire. And indeed, hours after the TorrentFreak report was posted -- and after it was picked up by numerous Internet news sites and blogs -- the Pirate Bay admitted on its Facebook page that its announcement was intended to show that it is not in business for the money. A profit-hungry idiot ... doesn't tell the world that they have partnered with the most hated dictatorship in the world. We can play that stunt though, cause we're still only in it for the f***in lulz [laughs] and it doesn't matter to us if thousands of users disband [sic] the ship. Apparently some users had done just that. Applauds [sic] to you who told us to f*** off. Always stay critical towards everyone! it said.
