Nicole Kidman loved her late mother’s life advice and sense of style.

The 57-year-old actress told fans she was in “shock” after she heard her former nursing instructor mum Janelle Kidman had passed away hours before she was awarded a best actress award for her role in her new movie ‘Babygirl’ at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday. (08.09.24)

Nicole’s recent interviews about her incredibly close relationship with Janelle have resurfaced as she fights grief, with concerned fans sharing them online as part of their well-wishes they have been sending the actress online.

The actress, who was born in Honolulu and raised in Sydney by Janelle and her psychologist father Antony – who died in September 2014 – told People in November her mum was vital when it came to her fashion choices.

She said about turning to Janelle despite having the world’s best stylists at hand:

“My mother is still… she’s so involved in what I wear.

“I love fashion. I’ve always loved fashion. I grew up as a little girl with a grandmother that loved fashion and could sew and my mother the same.

“They loved beautiful clothes. They could make beautiful clothes.

“I watched them sew, embroider, and knit, crochet. And I think when you grow up seeing the people in your household do that, then you love that.”

In an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald in 2020, Nicole told how she missed her mum and her wisdom when she was living in the US.

She said: “I would love to be able to have a cup of tea with mum and sit on the balcony and talk about life, and have her tell me what I should be doing.”

Nicole also had an equally close relationship with her dad Antony and was left devastated when he was killed by a heart attack in September 2014 aged 75.

The Oscar-winner previously revealed his death, as well as a string of other losses in her family, had let her traumatised.

Nicole’s shock over her mum’s death was announced by ‘Babygirl’ director Halina Reijn, 48, at the Venice Film Festival.

She read a statement to fans from Nicole that said: “Today I arrived in Venice to find out shortly after, that my beautiful, brave mother Janelle Ann Kidman has just passed.

“I am in shock and I have to go to my family, but this award is for her, she shaped me, she guided me, and she made me.

“I am beyond grateful that I get to say her name to all of you through Halina, the collision of life and art is heart-breaking, and my heart is broken.

“We love you all.”
