Actor Peter Dinklage used his acceptance speech at the 2012 Golden Globes ceremony to highlight a recent 'dwarf tossing' incident, in which a British man named Martin Henderson was severely injured in a seemingly unprovoked attack.
The U.S. actor, who won a Globe for his role in the acclaimed television series 'Game of Thrones', told a television audience of nearly 17 million, "I want to mention a gentleman I'm thinking about in England. His name is Martin Henderson. Google him". As expected, the name became one of the most searched terms on the web while also becoming a trending topic on Twitter. TV viewers complying with Dinklage's suggestion soon learned that Martin Henderson is man who walks with the help of crutches or a wheelchair after an attack left him with back and leg injuries. Mr Henderson, who is just 4ft 6in was dropped from a height of around one-metre by an unknown attacker who was nearly 6ft tall. Speaking to BBC News, the 37-year-old spoke of his astonishment at being mentioned by the Hollywood actor, saying, "I just couldn't believe it when I woke up yesterday morning". On his excruciating injuries, Mr Henderson said, "I never heard of anyone being picked on like this. I feel very, very upset about it. It is frightening. I think we're an easy target".
Speaking about his height to the Today Show in 2003, Dinklage explained, "As an adolescent, I was bitter and angry, and I definitely put up these walls. But the older you get, you realize you just have to have a sense of humor. You just know that it's not your problem. It's theirs".
