Leopold Sucha lives in Poland during the Second World War. The country has been occupied by the Nazis and as such, the Jewish population are in mortal danger. Leopold isn't a Nazi but he is anti-Semetic.
One day, he comes across a dozen Jews who are hiding in the sewers beneath the city. Their ghetto was invaded by Nazis, looking to round them up and send them off to concentration camps but the ones who escaped through a hole in the floor did so just in time. At first, Leopold is tempted to turn them into the Nazis but he soon senses a money making scheme to be had.
Boasting that he knows the sewers better than his wife, Leopold starts charging the Jews what little they have to take refuge underground. As the months go by, though, Leopold continues risking his life to visit the people in the sewers, discovering that he has actually grown fond of them. Can they survive in their less than habitable conditions until the end of the war, or will they be discovered by the Nazis?
