Despite not-that-great reviews, audiences stayed loyal to the Divergent franchise this weekend.
Despite its overwhelming popularity, which easily drove it to the top of the box office chart, Insurgent's estimated $45 million opening weekend still puts it a few million short of its predecessor, Divergent's $54,6 million debut. Is this sequel fatigue at work then? Well, while the numbers haven't been confirmed yet, the film might actually catch up to the first movie in the franchise, but only just. It's looking unlikely that Insurgent will match initial estimates of a $60 million debut and it's not because of stiff box office competition.
Despite largely negative reviews, Insurgent seems likely to match the success of its predecessor, Divergent.
The other debut this weekend, Sean Penn's The Gunman, is falling far behind - not only compared to Insurgent, but also its own modest expectations, Variety reports. The Open Road thriller, which made just $1,8 million on Friday. Penn stars as an ex-Special Forces soldier with PTSD who's forced to take on one final mission to clear his name. Idris Elba, Javier Bardem and Jasmine Trinca round out the cast.

Early estimates put it in a close race with Kingsman: The Secret Service. The British comedy is staying put on its sixth weekend at the box office. Elsewhere in the box office chart, another aging actor man is making waves. The Liam Neeson starrer Run All Night reeled in $1.4 million on Friday for a third place finish ahead of Gunman and Kingsman. It will likely fall to fifth by Sunday with $4.5 million.
