Blockbuster director Colin Trevorrow has suggested that filming for the ninth Star Wars movie might actually take place in space.

The young director, who scored a massive box office success with Jurassic World in 2015, recently signed up to direct the final instalment of the Star Wars saga, and revealed while attending a panel at the Sundance Film Festival that he has already submitted a request to the International Space Station to take a camera there to shoot some scenes.

“I asked the question, ‘Is it possible for us to shoot IMAX film plates in actual space for Star Wars?’” Trevorrow said, according to Digital Spy. “I haven’t gotten an answer yet but they’ve shot IMAX in space!”

Fellow director Christopher Nolan, who was in charge of the space epic Interstellar in 2014, was also at the panel and backed Trevorrow, saying that he had already had “that conversation” when trying to shoot his own film. In the event, Nolan used “incredible” but pre-existing NASA footage for it.

Shooting a movie in space is possible and has been done before, on Warner Bros.’ documentary movie Hubble 3D, which followed astronauts carrying out repairs on the Hubble Space Telescope.

Trevorrow, 39, also said that he would be using actual film to shoot Star Wars: Episode IX, rather than George Lucas’ preferred method of using digital methods only. “The only place where I tend to not be able to attach myself entirely to something shot digitally is when it’s a period film,” he said.

“There’s something in my brain that goes, ‘Well, they didn’t have video cameras then’. Film tends to remind us of our memories, of our childhoods, the way we used to see films. I could never shoot Star Wars on anything but film because it’s a period film. It happened a long time ago!”

Star Wars: Episode IX has a tentative release date of May 2019, but this may be pushed back in light of Disney’s recently confirmed intention to delay the release of the eighth movie, to be directed by Rian Johnson, until December 2017.
