When writer/director Rian Johnson joined 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi', legions of fans were immediately excited about what the filmmaker would bring to the world's biggest sci-fi franchise. Having already worked on such projects as 'Looper' and three episodes of 'Breaking Bad', expectations were high right from the get-go.

With the film's subtitle and the trailers that have shown Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) stating that the Jedi must come to an end, a lot of questions have been raised about exactly where 'The Last Jedi' will take the series and build upon the foundations left by 'The Force Awakens', and the original six episodic movies.

Not only that, but the subjects of parentage, redemption, hope and ambitions are all huge talking points, with many of the characters both new and old facing some tough decisions about where they'd like to place themselves in the grand scheme of things. With all of these questions, viewers will learn about some in 'The Last Jedi', but not all.

Speaking about Rian Johnson's direction with the series, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said on The Star Wars Show: "I think he's done an exceptional job of taking these new characters and some of the legacy characters and moving us to this next place. He doesn't answer all the questions, I will say that up front. But there are certain questions he does answer in a really wonderfully provocative way, and I think there'll be some surprises that people aren't expecting."

It's exciting to know that, despite all of the rumours surrounding the different directions the story could take in 'The Last Jedi', Kennedy still thinks viewers are going to be surprised by a couple of twists and turns that are coming our way.

Knowing that there will still be a plethora of questions for us all to run over in our heads until the ninth episode in the movie series is also reassuring, as wrapping everything up this early could see those working on the franchise shooting themselves in the foot. We can't wait to see what Johnson and the rest of the team have up their sleeves.

'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' is set for release in UK cinemas on December 15, 2017, with 'Episode IX' scheduled to drop two years later in December 2019.
