Tom Cruise’s character in ‘Edge of Tomorrow’, Major William Cage, isn’t just thrown into a suicide mission; he’s thrown into hundreds of suicide missions. See, he can’t die, not permanently anyway. He lives, he dies, he repeats. That’s the bones of the premise for this sci-fi action flick, which also stars Emily Blunt.

And it would appear that there are three possible outcomes for this film: ‘Stinker’, ‘wait for the DVD’ or ‘best thing ever’. Here are the possibilities of all those outcomes, using the scientifically disapproved methods: guesswork, conjecture and prejudgement. 

Outcome one  - the film is amazing, it redefines sci-fi and moulds the genre for years to come. 

Probability: 0.004%

Judging from what we’ve seen, Edge of Tomorrow doesn’t break any boundaries when it comes to action or sci-fi. We’ve seen immortality before; giant mech-suits and political corruption aren’t exactly new to us either.

There’s every chance this will turn into a sentimental pile of excrement without any redeeming features, leading to a score of 19% on Rotten Tomatoes and a below average box office return. Every chance. 

Outcome two: some critics like it, some don’t – most people wait for it on DVD or illegally download it

Probability: 38.4%

It’s not beyond the bounds of possibility that Edge of Tomorrow strikes a chord with a few sci-fi fanatics who can find something to love. Tom Cruise managed to achieve indifference bordering on praise with Oblivion, and seeing constantly re-spawn into an alien war might prove entertainment enough.

If the writers - Christopher McQuarrie, Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth – find a plausible and unexpected way for Cruise’s character to break the live, die, repeat loop, and give it a meaningful impact on the overall plot, then mediocrity could be achieved. Lofty targets indeed. 

Outcome three: critically panned, Edge of Tomorrow is an unmitigated disaster

Probability: 79%

Our bet would be on a disappointing sci-fi effort with little to offer anyone. It’s a damning prediction, for sure, but Tom Cruise’s name hasn’t exactly been synonymous with quality of late. The tired old role of underdog is something he needs to shake, and pint-sized action hero – while being the basis of his career – is getting a bit tiresome now. Emily Blunt can go back to the stage, too. Sorry.

So there you have it. Edge of Tomorrow will be rubbish and we can all go back to looking forward to Interstellar.
