The movie trailer for the upcoming biopic of Jimi Hendrix has been released. The film, entitled Jimi: All Is By My Side, stars Outkast's Andre 3000 AKA Andre Benjamin as the late rock icon.

Hendrix became a rock icon in the 1970s but his life was tragically cut sort in 1970 when he died at the age of 27. The cause of death cited as a lethal concoction of prescription medication which led to asphyxia, causing Hendrix to choke on his own vomit. The film has been long anticipated as Hendrix's story truly epitomises the astronomic rise and tragic demise of a hugely popular and influential figure.

All Is By My Side has already caused controversy and been criticised by many of Hendrix's friends. Hendrix's girlfriend and muse, Kathy Etchingham, spoke out against the filming claiming most of it was "completely made up". As the Telegraph reports, one scene in the film shows Hendrix assaulting Etchingham but she has decried this portrayal, saying "He was a gentle person - funny, entertaining, articulate, and knew exactly which direction he was going in."

12 Years A Slave screen writer, John Ridley, has penned the script and directed the soon-to-be-released biopic. In addition to Andre 3000, the film stars Imogen Poots (A Long Way Down), Hayley Atwell (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), Burn Gorman (Game of Thrones) and Ruth Negga (Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.).

In an unorthodox approach, the film focuses on 12 months in 1967 three years before Hendrix's death, as Billboard reports. Bizarrely, the film also does not use any of Hendrix's music as his label refused to allow the filmmakers to use it. Yet this has not detracted from the film which has already shown at numerous film festivals worldwide including in Los Angeles on 12th June. Reviews of the film have been largely positive with Empire's critic praising the unusual biopic approach and L.A. Daily New's reviewer describing the casting of Andre 3000 as "genius".

Jimi: All Is By My Side is due to be released in the UK on 8th August 2014.
