Sex And The City’ star Kim Cattrall believes that starring in the popular series has ruined her love life. Sweet Bird Of Youth: Kim Cattrall's New Character Faces Up To The Reality Of Age

Kim Cattrall Seth Numrich

In a starring role, Kim Cattrall will read the part of ageing actress Alexandra Del Lago who engages in an affair with a gigolo who is much younger than her.

Cattrall describes her character as "a f****d-up, sex and drug addicted alcoholic who's self-hating and self-loathing" which, she adds, is easy to play because she possesses none of those traits.

Set in a racially segregated Floridian town, the play will be staged at London's prestigious Old Vic theatre.

Kim Cattrall Returns Home To Play Hollywood Star At The Old Vic

Kim Cattrall Kevin Spacey James Earl Jones Vanessa Redgrave

Sex and the City actress Kim Cattrall is to return to the stage for the Old Vic's forthcoming production of Tennessee Williams' Sweet Bird Of Young. The Liverpool-born actress will play a failing Hollywood star who quits the movie business when her anticipated comeback is a flop, reports the Press Association.

A noted theatre actress, Cattrall appeared as Cleopatra in the Chichester revival of Janet Suzman's production of Antony and Cleopatra last summer. She's spent increasingly more time in the UK since the last Sex and the City movie and told The Independent in June, "After Sex and the City ended I was exhausted and needed time out. My marriage was coming to an end and my job was finished and my father had just been diagnosed with dementia. I thought I just needed to stop...I needed to go home. For me that was England and Canada, and England was where I started working again and I'm so glad I did, I feel replenished and strong. Sometimes you really do need to go home again." The Old Vic's spring schedule is awash with high profile names as artistic director Kevin Spacey steps up his programme at the historic venue. It includes a version of Terence Rattigan's The Winslow Boy as well as Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing with stage legends James Earl Jones and Vanessa Redgrave. "The Old Vic has always been first and foremost an actors' theatre, a home for great talent and memorable performances," said Spacey, "I am delighted to welcome Lindsay Posner back to our theatre with The Winslow Boy and I know that audiences will be thrilled at the prospect of Kim Cattrall taking on Sweet Bird Of Youth directed by Marianne Elliott, whom we are so excited to welcome for the first time."

Currently showing at the Old Vic is the Trevor Nunn directed Kiss Me Kate, with Alex Bourne, David Burt and Adam Garcia.

Sex And The City Review

Weak
Whenever you bring a popular TV series to the big screen, you always face one inevitable difficulty -- will this material play outside the already dedicated fanbase? Does familiarity breed financial rewards, or does the concept's proverbial companion "contempt" expose the limited interests involved. This is the dilemma that faces the four-years-in-the-making Sex and the City: The Movie. While writer/director Michael Patrick King is no longer simply playing to the feverish fanatics who made the series a pay cable success, he does nothing to broaden the scope -- or potential appeal -- of this bit of now tired pseudo-Cinderella shallowness.

As columnist/author Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) prepares to move in with her longtime beau Mr. Big (Chris Noth), her three fabulous friends are facing their own unique issues. Samantha (Kim Cattrall), after five years in California with her soap actor boy toy (Jason Lewis), is getting antsy for her old stomping grounds... and sexual ways. Miranda's (Cynthia Nixon) husband Steve (David Eigenberg) has been feeling unloved, and his actions drive a wedge in their marriage. And Charlotte (Kristin Davis) loves being a wife and mother. When a suddenly-planned wedding goes awry, Carrie hires Manhattan newbie Louise (Jennifer Hudson) to help sort out her life. Turns out, it's harder to find love than any one of these modern gals previously imagined.

Terrible
A modern-day pirate movie?

Yes, sadly, and that means we have a glaucoma victim (Faye Dunaway), an grubby fat man (Ned Beatty), and a garden-variety hussy (Kim Cattrall, proving that you can work a single hairdo for 15 years, no problem) on a little sailboat in search of money hidden in Cuba during the Bay of Pigs.

Good
You know how people talk about a movie being so bad it's good? Police Academy is that movie.

No, it is that movie. It embodies the badness-goodness paradox so fully that it spawned six sequels and two TV series (one animated)... so far.

OK

Freshly graduated from jail bait status, Britney Spears wastes no time getting down to her skivvies for her acting debut in the coming-of-age road movie "Crossroads."

After a prologue in which three little girls bury a box of mementos and pledge to dig it up the night of their high school graduation, the film cuts to eight years later when one of those girls has grown up into Lucy (Spears), who is introduced bouncing around her room, lip-syncing to Madonna songs in her two-sizes-too-small underwear.

Later she appears in an even teeny-weenier pink bra and panties -- then in a towel, then in a wet dress, a bikini and several other low-cut and high-cut outfits. Perhaps this is a concession to the all the reluctant teenage boyfriends that will get dragged to this picture by their Britney-loving girlfriends.
