'Triplets' will be ''tongue in cheek''.

The comedy sequel to 1988 film 'Twins' will see Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Devito return - joined by a third brother played by Eddie Murphy - and while it will pay homage to the original, screen writer Josh Gad says it will include much more modern comedy.

He told ComingSoon.net: ''We're very reverential to the original, but have our tongue firmly in our cheek. As it needs to be, it's very modernised. It's taking them into the new world and it's acknowledging that comedy's changed a lot in 20 years.

''If you saw 'Twins' and it was released as a movie currently, you'd be like, 'This is really strange,' so we honour that and respect it, but we also play on it.''

Earlier this year, DeVito said he was excited about the film, but was waiting for the right script to come along.

He said: ''Arnold and I have had dinner about it. We met with Eddie Murphy. Universal is very excited about doing it. It's just a matter of finding the script that we like and a story that works.''

Josh has previously written mainly for TV, penning episodes of 'Gigi: Almost American' and '1600 Penn', both of which he also appeared in. He has teamed up with Ryan Dixon, who wrote the story for forthcoming film 'Opening Night', on the screenplay.

A date for the start of filming on 'Triplets' has yet to be decided.
