Billy Joel has announced 'Turn The Lights Back On', which will mark his first pop single in 17 years.
Billy Joel has announced his first solo single in 17 years.
The 'Piano Man' legend will drop new track 'Turn The Lights Back On' - his first since 2007's 'All My Life' and only his second since 1993 - on all streaming platforms as well as a limited edition vinyl on February 1.
The single - which will be released via Columbia Records - will be accompanied by a lyric video on his official YouTube Channel.
He penned the track with Freddy Wexler - the Grammy-nominated songwriter who also produced the track - alongside Arthur Bacon and Wayne Hector.
The song features the lyrics: "Did I wait too long… to turn the lights back on?”
Last month, the 74-year-old musician started teasing the possibility of new music - his first new material in almost two decades - with a video of himself talking on stage.
In the clip shared on his official TikTok account, he said: "I have good news, I have bad news, I’ll give you the bad news first. We don’t have anything new to play for you.
"The good news is you don’t have to sit through something you have no idea what it is!
"Although … we got a little something we’re working on you might hear some time.”
It's not clear if the new single is simply a one off, or if the track will be followed by more songs or even a full album.
However, in the past the music icon has explained his decision to stop recording new material.
He recently told the New Yorker magazine: "Some people think it’s because I’m lazy or I’m just being contrary…
"But, no, I think it’s just — I’ve had my say…
"I’m not crazy about going into a recording studio and doing that kind of life again, or taking on another project where there’s other people involved, arrangers and orchestrators and conductors and producers.
"I don’t want to deal with it.”
