Hello, My Name Is Doris Trailer

Since the loss of her mother, Doris hasn't really had much companionship. She has her best friend and work colleagues but love has always been something that's alluded her. She once had an offer of marriage but knowing that this would separate her from her mother, she declined.

After meeting the new director of art at her place of work, Doris automatically feels a connection with him. Sure, John might be a few years her junior and into very different things to herself, but Doris has a niggling feeling she can't leave alone. Doris might be a little bookish and bespectacled but she decides to explore new methods to attract her man.

Along the way Doris befriends some of John's friends, who at first might seem entirely different to Doris but in actuality have a lot of similarities. Doris must find a way to balance her new and old friends and also win her man. Hello, My Name is Doris actually started out as an eight minute short called Doris and the Intern, written and directed by Laura Terruso. Director Michael Showalter instantly saw the potential in the initial footage and started work on a large scale version of the film.

Edward Scissorhands - Clips

Edward Scissorhands is no ordinary boy, as his name may tell. Created by a genius inventor who passed away before his subject was completed, he seems doomed to a life of solitude in a dilapidated castle. That is until the local Avon lady named Peg Boggs calls round and willingly takes the poor boy under her wing. Integrating him into civilised society isn't easy, however. While many neighbours are deeply accepting and impressed by his ability to cut hair and trim hedges, others see him as a danger with his bladed fingers that could easily cause some damage. Peg's daughter Kim is a little uneasy, despite how immediately taken Edward is of her, and her friends recognise this weakness and aim to exploit it to their advantage. Predictably, Edward's mistakes get him into a lot of trouble and he soon finds that the novelty of his presence is wearing thin.

The Rewrite Trailer

Keith Michaels once had it all; recognition and money from an award-winning screenplay and an attractive wife to share it with. However, now he's nearing middle-age and he no longer seems to have any of it. Sure, his famed movie is still a hit, but he's struggling to find any more work and now that he's sadly divorced, the only support he has is from his agent. Desperate to make ends meet, the agent offers him last resort; there's a teaching post vacancy at a small town university in Binghamton, available to teachers in screenwriting. With a Golden Globe hit under his belt, he's a sure-fire candidate for the job - but it's the last thing he wants to do. However, he soon finds the silver lining in that a string of attractive young students have applied to enrol on his course and he uses the opportunity to revel amongst young women, while doing as little work as possible. When he meets mature student Holly though, he's inspired to turn his spiralling life back around.

Tuesdays With Morrie Review

Good
I didn't read Mitch Albom's book, Tuesdays With Morrie, which spent about two jillion years on the bestseller lists. But based on the movie, I can see why so many people bought the book and why it's ripe for criticism.

As Brandeis University professor Morrie Schwartz's body deteriorated from Lou Gehrig's Disease, former student Albom decided to record the man's thoughts on an array of topics. If the movie is anything like the book, then Morrie sounds like the world's foremost pop psychologist.

What Planet Are You From? Review

Bad

A comedian whose schtick has always been his acute social-sexual dysfunction, in "What Planet Are You From?" Garry Shandling is nothing if not well-cast as an alien packed off to Earth by his neutered, all-male race to impregnate an earth female as a prelude to invasion.

Given a crash course in inept pick-up lines and fitted with a motorized prosthetic penis that hums when he's aroused, Shandling is transported to the privy of a passenger jet and emerges to piggishly proposition stewardesses and every other female in sight, in what has to be the most awkwardly sexist comedy since the 1960s.

Populated by fundamentally unlikable, abusive men and pathetically needy, bitchy women, the drudging, deadpan farce tracks Shandling's libidinous frustration as he fails to pick up chicks and is chased by FAA investigator John Goodman (his arrival caused an air traffic incident), who figures out his secret with the flimsiest of suppositions.

Beyond The Sea Review

Good

This Bobby Darin biopic reportedly spent about 20 years going through various drafts by many different screenwriters -- including James Toback and Paul Schrader -- before Kevin Spacey grabbed it and made it all his own.

Borrowing more than just a little from Bob Fosse's "All That Jazz," the co-writer, director and star sets his film in a kind of flashback/dream structure in which Darin (Spacey) talks with himself as a little kid. This non-reality also allows for the 45 year-old actor to play Darin, who died at age 37, throughout his career.

Spacey's Darin thinks very highly of himself; when he snatches up teen heartthrob Sandra Dee (Kate Bosworth) as his wife, it feels more like trophy gathering than romance. Yet Spacey's own gigantic hubris fits the part perfectly, and when Darin grouses about not winning the Oscar for "Captain Newman, M.D.," you can feel Spacey going through the same thing. When Spacey sings in Darin's voice, it's an act of supreme ego; he's as sure of his Darin impersonation as he is of his own greatness, and it works.
