The domestic box office remained sluggish as it entered March with only a single weekend of the year performing better than last year -- and that was the Presidents Day weekend, which occurred one week later than Presidents Day weekend in 2010. Last weekend, the top 12 movies earned a combined $121.14 million -- only slightly more than the No. 1 film, Alice in Wonderland , earned all on its own during the comparable weekend a year ago ($116 million). By comparison, the top film this weekend, Paramount's animated Rango , earned $38.1 million. The Adjustment Bureau opened in second place with $21.2 million -- at the high end of forecasts. In third place Beastly proved to be something of a beauty for CBS Films, which has struggled since its launch in 2007. The film, starring Alex Pettyfer and Vanessa Hudgens, earned $9.9 million; it reportedly cost only $16 million to make. But a fourth new film, Take Me Home Tonight , which was completed in the same year that CBS Films was launched, found few takers, winding up in 12th place with just $3.5 million. Two holdover movies, Hall Pass and Just Go With It , experienced moderate declines below 40 percent, coming in at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively.
