Disney Accused Of "Colonialism" Over Trademark Of 'Hakuna Matata'

Disney

Upwards of 70,000 people have signed petition urging Disney to drop their trademark of ‘hakuna matata’ from The Lion King, accusing the company of “colonialism and robbery”.

The expression means ‘no problem’ or ‘no worries’ in Swahili, a language spoken in several East African countries including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and D.R. Congo. ‘Hakuna matata’ was popularised in 1982 by the Kenyan band Them Mushrooms, whose platinum-selling single ‘Jambo Bwana (Hello, Mister)’ featured the phrase. It was later featured in Disney’s 1994 animation The Lion King, which spawned a hit musical and has since became one of Disney’s most lucrative franchises.

Disney was granted an American trademark for the expression way back in 2003, which protects the use of the phrase on clothing and footwear.

Jack Whitehall's Casting As Gay Character In Disney's 'Jungle Cruise' Slammed

Jack Whitehall Disney

Disney is facing a backlash over the casting of Jack Whitehall as the studio’s first openly gay major film character in the upcoming film Jungle Cruise.

The comedian, who is straight, announced he was “honoured” at being appointed to the role for the film, due to arrive in 2019. However, the news has led to some criticism from the LGBTQ+ community, with many asking why Disney couldn’t have given the role to a gay actor.

Furthermore, reports on Wednesday (August 15th) that Whitehall’s character will be “hugely effete” and “very camp” led to campaigners for LGBTQ+ rights warned that Disney risked getting the tone wrong for a potential watershed moment by “playing up to negative tropes and received ideas about queer people”.

James Gunn Unlikely To Be Re-Hired As 'Guardians Of The Galaxy 3' Director

James Gunn Disney

Despite a petition to get him re-hired as director of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and the overwhelming support of the cast, it seems as though Disney’s decision to fire him over controversial old tweets won’t be reversed.

According to a report by Variety on Wednesday night (August 1st), the studio is unlikely to change its mind over the decision made last month to dismiss Gunn from the Marvel three-quel.

This comes as Disney, which owns Marvel Studios, has come under pressure to reconsider its stance, after a public petition was launched to re-instate Gunn last week. A few days later, the entire cast of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 pledged its “full support” to the director, with lead star Chris Pratt going even further and calling directly for Gunn’s reinstatement.

Idina Menzel, Demi Lovato And Disney Being Sued Over 'Let It Go' Copyright Infringement

Idina Menzel Demi Lovato Disney

Idina Menzel, Demi Lovato and Disney are all being sued by musician Jaime Ciero, who is claiming that the massively popular song ‘Let It Go’ from Frozen sounds substantively similar to a song of his.

‘Let It Go’ was the memorable soundtrack to the runaway success of Disney’s 2013 animated movie Frozen, and a song that has subsequently driven millions of parents completely round the bend. It was performed by actress Idina Menzel for the movie itself, and by pop star Demi Lovato for the single version.

However, TMZ reports on Thursday (November 23rd) that musician Jaime Ciero is suing the three defendants, claiming that ‘Let It Go’ sounds overly similar to his 2008 song ‘Volar’.

Disney Announces New 'Star Wars' Trilogy With Rian Johnson

Star Wars Disney Rian Johnson

Disney would appear to be extremely confident about Rian Johnson’s handling of the upcoming Star Wars movie The Last Jedi, revealing that they have green-lit a further trilogy of movies, entirely under the director’s aegis.

The 43 year old director will be writing and directing the first instalment of the planned new trilogy of films, with Johnson’s long-time production partner Ram Bergman working with him.

Although the details are vague at this point, rather than continuing the classic Skywalker-based timeline of the nine existing films, this trilogy will focus on “new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.”

'Hocus Pocus' Director Wants Sequel With Original Cast

Disney Bette Midler Kenny Ortega

When it comes to Disney, there are more classic animations than anything else. One of the exceptions to that rule however comes in the form of Halloween must-watch, 'Hocus Pocus'. Starring the brilliant Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy in the leading role of villainous witches Winifred, Sarah and Mary respectively, it's a film that achieved cult status upon home release.

What many don't know is that 'Hocus Pocus' wasn't a big box office hit. In fact, it didn't fare very well upon its initial release at all, taking a short while to really take off. Looking back, it's hard to imagine why people didn't go out in their droves to see the flick, as it still stands up as one of the best seasonal pictures of all time and even to this day takes in around $1 million in sales each October.

Disney Accused Of Whitewashing Over New Billy Magnussen Role

Disney Billy Magnussen Guy Ritchie

Disney has been strongly criticised on social media for an act of whitewashing concerning its new live action re-make of Aladdin, apparently creating an entirely new role for a white actor.

The company is believed to have cast Billy Magnussen (Into The Woods, Bridge of Spies) as a character called Prince Anders, who does not feature in the 1992 animated Aladdin or the original folklore ‘Aladdin and the Magic Lamp’, for its upcoming live-action film.

The decision follows an existing outcry over the casting of Naomi Scott, a non-Arab actor of British and Indian heritage, as Princess Jasmine two months ago. She’ll star alongside Mena Massoud, who is of Egyptian background, as Aladdin himself, and Will Smith in the role of the Genie.
