The hammer-wielding demigod, who was played by Chris Hemsworth in the Marvel films, will return in a new comic book series as a female, as the publisher attempts to create a gender balanced roster.
The almighty 'Thor' will now be relatable to both genders.
In this midst of criticism over Marvel Comics being too geared towards their male audiences, Marvel Entertainment made a surprising announcement on Tuesday (July 15th).
Australian actor Chris Hemsworth played 'Thor' in the Marvel movies
The hammer-wielding demigod, who is played by the muscular Chris Hemsworth in the Marvel movies, will be revived as a female in a new comic book series, launching in October.
Since the superhero's incarnation by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1962, 'Thor' has always been referred to as a male.

"The inscription on Thor's hammer reads 'Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.' Well it's time to update that inscription," Marvel editor Wil Moss said in a statement. "The new Thor continues Marvel's proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more."
Moss also wanted to reiterate to fans that the female version Thor will be exactly the same character, and not a feminized parody.

"This new Thor isn't a temporary female substitute -- she's now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy," he added.
The man responsible for writing the new 'Thor,' Jason Aaron, repeated Moss's views.

"This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is Thor. This is the Thor of the Marvel Universe. But it's unlike any Thor we've ever seen before," Aaron said.
It is still unknown what the female lightning-wielding hero's connection to the rest of the Marvel Universe, and her home planet Asgard, will be. But it is obvious many eager fans will be very excited to find out once the new series of comic books hits the stores this coming fall.
