The star claimed Best Independent Artist, Best Independent Single or EP for Depreston and Best Album for Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit, shutting out her main rival, Vance Joy, who was also nominated in all three categories.

Barnett also took home Best Independent Label for Milk!, the firm she co-founded with fellow artist Jen Cloher.

She was unable to attend the show in Melbourne due to touring commitments in the U.S., but she took to Twitter.com after hearing the news and wrote, "Thanks 4 (sic) the AIR awardz (sic)! Best independent single, artist & album. And best indie label to @milk_records yeah!"

Other winners included #1 Dads (Breakthrough Independent Artist of the Year), Frank Yamma (Best Independent Country Album for Uncle) and Seth Sentry (Best Independent Hip Hop Album for Strange New Past).
