Duncan Jones, son of the late David Bowie, has revealed that his father learned shortly before his death that he would be a grandfather.

On Wednesday (February 10th), a month after his father passed away from cancer, 44 year old Jones tweeted a heartfelt message saying that Bowie had learned at Christmas time that he would become a grandfather. A hand-drawn cartoon of a baby with an umbilical cord protruding from its stomach accompanied the message, with a speech bubble saying ‘I’m waiting’.

Jones, a BAFTA-award winning director for Moon in 2009 and the man behind 2011’s Source Code and the upcoming Warcraft movie, is married to photographer Rodene Ronquillo, and they informed Bowie in December that they were expecting their first child, and his first grandchild.

“1 month since dad died today. Made this card for him at Christmas. Due in June. Circle of life. Love you, grandad,” the poignant tweet read.

Ronquillo shared the news via her own Twitter feed moments later. “Shame on those of you who just thought I was really fat and didn’t say anything. Haha,” her post read as she posted the same picture as her husband had.

Duncan is the only child from Bowie’s ten-year marriage to his first wife, Angie. He has been estranged from her for the last 30 years.

In 2013, Ronquillo was given the all-clear following her own battle with cancer, which saw her undergo a double mastectomy. “My fiance, at the time, ended up finding my lump. It was right underneath my breast, above my rib,” she said in an interview at that time. They got married in 2012, shortly after her diagnosis.
