Some of the biggest names in film were out last night for the Jameson Empire Film Awards, which saw the year's biggest and best movies awarded for a storming year in filmmaking. Voted for by the public, the awards presented a somewhat different picture of the last year in film than most of the other big awards ceremonies have done so far.

Space thriller Gravity and the fantasy sequel The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug were the evening's biggest winners with the former winning Best Film and Best Director for Alfonso Cuarón whilst the latter picked up Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Best Male Newcomer for Aiden Turner, AKA Kili. Saving Mr, Banks star Emma Thompson and Filth actor James McAvoy took home the respective male and female acting awards, according to the movie magazine.

In the supporting categories, Blue Jasmine actress Sally Hawkins was a victor alongside 12 Years a Slave's Michael Fassbender. The Wolf of Wall Street's Margot Robbie was awarded Best Female Newcomer, whilst Aiden Turner from The Hobbit received the male counterpart prize.

Steve Coogan's Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa saw off competition from the likes of Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues and This Is 40 to win the best comedy prize. The best horror award went to The Conjuring, which was directed by Saw and Insidious writer James Wan.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire was picked as the year's best thriller and Simon Pegg was honoured with Best British Film for his latest comedy, The World's End. The overwhelmed actor was also presented with the 'Empire Hero' award in recognition for his contribution to comedy via acting, writing and directing.

The awards also presented the opportunity for some particularly big stars to be awarded for the breadth of their career. Tom Cruise was selected to win the 'Legend of our Lifetime' prize, which he accepted with a beam. "Thank you so much. I feel really fortunate because it was my dream to be able to make films in life," said Cruise upon his receipt of the shining silver trophy.

Equally, Les Misérables star Hugh Jackman took home the Empire Icon Award, Arnold Schwarzenegger was selected as 'Action Hero of our Lifetime' and Captain Phillips director Paul Greengrass was name the 'Empire Inspiration.'
