Oskar Schell is an eleven year old genius who views the world differently to others. He is also a Francophile, an amateur inventor and a pacifist. He's very close to his father and together they make it their mission to find something from every decade of the twentieth century in what he called a 'reconnaissance mission.'
One September morning in 2001, Oskar is out and about in the busy New York streets when he witnesses the devastating attack on the World Trade Center, which kills his father. The effect on Oskar and his mother is devastating and for days they can't get over the sad news.
But when Oskar is looking in his dad's closet, he finds a mysterious key. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be anything in the house that the key fits in. So Oskar embarks on a search through all five boroughs of New York, searching for the object that houses the key and meeting all sorts of people along the way.
