A Week In Movies: Cavill Replaces Cruise, Juno Temple Is Magic, Tom Hardy As Sir Elton?

Some were shocked and others relieved when news broke this week that Tom Cruise has dropped out of starring in Guy Ritchie's new Man From U.N.C.L.E. movie. Like Mission: Impossible, it's based on a 1960s TV series about a secret espionage agency. Now Henry Cavill (soon to be seen as the Man of Steel) has emerged as the front-runner to replace Cruise as spy leader Napoleon Solo.

Meanwhile, Juno Temple arrived to talk about her role as a mentally disturbed young woman in the upcoming film Magic Magic. She stars opposite Michael Cera, and mentions a wrenching confrontation as her favourite scene in the film, which was screened as part of the Director's Fortnight at Cannes.

Then Cera had his chance to speak, talking about his admiration for Temple's stamina throughout the emotionally and physically gruelling shoot. He also discusses learning Spanish for the role and made some comments on hit recently revived cult TV series Arrested Development. Directed by acclaimed Chilean filmmaker Sebastian Silva (The Maid), Magic Magic will have its UK premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in June.

Disney cranked up its marketing machine to give us a sneak peak of its new animated adventure Planes, a spin-off from the Cars movies. Instead of a trailer, this is a 90-second scene from the film featuring two fighter jets (voiced by Top Gun stars Val Kilmer and Anthony Edwards) taunted by a small crop-duster (Dane Cook). It opens in August.

We also got our first glimpse of Delivery Man, a remake of last year's Canadian comedy-drama Starbuck. The teaser trailer shows a more comical approach to the story, in which Vince Vaughn stars as a slacker who discovers he has more than 500 children as a result of a sperm bank mix-up. The film costars Chris Pratt, Cobie Smulders and rising star Jack Reynor (Transformers 4), and is set to open in October.

And the best casting rumour this week is that Tom Hardy is being lined up to play none other than Elton John in the long-gestating biopic Rocketman, which is being described as a musical-fantasy trip through the flamboyant singer-songwriter's life and music. Sir Elton is producing the film himself.
