A rather bizarre story has come about: the showbiz and literary worlds are entwined as Kelly Clarkson – the popular U.S singer – is blocked from exporting Jane Austin – the famous British author’s – ring outside of the U.K, The BBC have reported.

Kelly bought the £152,450, turquoise and gold ring, which once belonged to the Pride and Prejudice author, at an auction. The 2002 winner of the American Idol TV has been stopped from taking it home, though, as Britain’s Culture Minister - Ed Vaizey -has put a temporary export bar on it.

Of course, it’s Kelly’s ring, and while the U.K doesn’t want to see it leave its shores, a buyer will have to match the hefty price tag by September 30th in order for it to stay ‘at home’. This deadline can be extended to 30 December if proof emerges of "a serious intention to raise funds" to match fee. We told you it was a bizarre story.

Mr Vaizey said: "Jane Austen's modest lifestyle and her early death mean that objects associated with her of any kind are extremely rare, so I hope that a UK buyer comes forward so this simple but elegant ring can be saved for the nation."

Four "national treasures" have had temporary export bars put on them by the government recently: Sir Henry "Tim" Birkin's Bentley Blower super-charged racing car, an archive of letters from General Wolfe and a collection of material that documents the Gregory Expedition to Northern Australia in the mid-1850s.
