The stand-up comedienne took to Twitter to defend the jokes she made about slavery in her first on-air appearance on the 'weekend Update' segment.
The stand-up comedian, who is one of the comedy show's new writers, featured in the 'Weekend Update' sketch, along with Colin Jost, when she made a very inappropriate joke.
Jones began to talk about Lupita Nyong'o's recent 'Most Beautiful' honor by People, but midway through the segment she joked about slavery, which was the main context Nyong'o's Oscar-winning film '12 Years A Slave.'
A heavy backlash on social media followed shortly after the episode aired.
"See, I'm single right now, but back in the slave days, I would have never been single. I'm six feet tall and I'm strong," she joked.
"I mean, look at me, I'm a mandingo," Jones added. "I'm just saying that back in the slave days, my love life would have been way better. Massah would have hooked me up with the best brotha on the plantation. I would be the No. 1 slave draft pick."
One of her biggest critics was the editor of Ebony.com Jamilah Lemieux, who wrote an article on the website slamming the sketch, titled 'Once Again No One Is Laughing At SNL.'
This outraged reaction to the frequent 'Just For Laugh's' performer's jokes, caused her to go on a lengthy Twitter rant in a response.
"Very sad I have to defend myself to black people," she tweeted Sunday. "Now I'm betting if Chris Rock or Dave Chappelle (sic) did that joke or (Jay Z) or Kanye put (it) in a rap they would be called brilliant."
"This exactly why black people are where we are now," Jones added. "'Cause we too f--king sensitive and instead of (making) lemonade out of lemons we just suck the sour juice from the lemons. Wake up."
"I wouldn't be able to do a joke like that if I didn't know my history or proud of where I came from and who I am," she continued, in an attempt to defend herself.
