Jamie Vlassakis had a troubled childhood; he was molested by a neighbour and his half brother, Troy Youde. At the age of sixteen, he is living with his mother, Elizabeth, Troy and his step brother David, when salvation in a form of a father figure appears.
John is introduced to the family as Elizabeth's new boyfriend. He is charismatic, charming and genuinely seems to enjoy the company of Jamie. The latter finds he can confide in John without fear of him telling his mum. John is horrified when he discovers Jamie was molested and raped - the former doesn't like paedophiles.
John persuades Jamie to shave his head, at the risk of Elizabeth disapproving. He teaches Jamie how to ride a motorbike and indoctrinates him on his extreme views regarding paedophiles and homosexuals. He persuades Jamie to abduct Troy and forces him to watch as his half brother Troy is brutally murdered. From then on, Jamie becomes a reluctant accomplice in what would later be known as the 'Snowtown murders'.
