'The Sims' is officially being turned into a feature film and is aiming to be as a big as 'Barbie'.
'The Sims' movie is officially in the works with Margot Robbie and husband Tom Ackerley set to produce the film.
After teaming up on the blockbusters 'Barbie' and 'Saltburn' last year, the couple - who were recently reported to be working on a 'Monopoly' movie - have been confirmed to be producing the adaptation of the popular EA video game under their LuckyChap Entertainment banner.
The video game giant has joined forces with Amazon MGM Studios on the flick, which is being helmed by Kate Herron - whose directing credits include 'Loki' and Sex Education' - and she will co-write with Briony Redman.
EA Entertainment president Laura Miele told Variety: “Teaming up with renowned Hollywood powerhouses, this exciting new chapter for ‘The Sims’ will bring its magic to millions more fans.
“It’s a testament to the enduring power of this beloved franchise, which has captivated more than 500 million players for a quarter of a century. Our commitment to innovate across ‘The Sims’ universe of experiences and products will inspire all generations of Simmers.”
EA Vice President and General Manager of 'The Sims' franchise Kate Gorman has detailed what fans can expect from the movie, and says they are aiming to emulate the success of 2023's 'Barbie' movie, which was the biggest-selling movie of the year.
She began: “What I will tell you is it’s very much rooted in ‘The Sims’ universe.
“And what we want is to have a truly authentic ‘Sims’ experience brought to a theatrical release. So what you’ll see from us is that we have been wanting to get this right. We wanted the right partners and to make an impact the size of something like a ‘Barbie‘ movie is exactly what we want. And we know there’s so much love and nostalgia, probably beyond what we would even realise, for ‘The Sims’ and so many people like us have played throughout generations. So we want this to be an experience that reflects all that amazing history and play of so many people in this world, but also is something that you can share across generations and to be part of pop culture and culturally relevant.”
Kate promised an "authentic 'Sims' experience" that appeals to all generations, even those not familiar with the simulation games.
She went on: “You will see a lot of ‘The Sims’ universe come to life and you will see a lot of the classic experiences that our players have in the games come to life in the movie.
“And that’s what we really want to deliver on, is just an authentic ‘Sims’ experience, and really have the most expansive ‘Sims’ offering we’ve ever had to bring that delight and share the experience of playing ‘The Sims’ with so many people or their friends or families who may not have actually played ‘The Sims,’ but you can help tell that story through watching a [movie] about ‘The Sims’ universe.”
Kate suggested they are still in the ideas phase, but fans can expect Freezer Bunnies, pools without ladders and more.
She said: “We haven’t finalised any of those details. But that’s the idea, is to say that it lives within this space. It’s a nod to all of the amazing play and creation and fun that people have had over the last 25 years within ‘The Sims'."
As for whether the Sim's will use their Simlish dialect, she teased; “It’s fun. It’s a great idea, and it’s something we’ll definitely talk about.”
