Adam Levine and his Moves Like Jagger bandmates have had "extensive talks" with National Football League (NFL) officials to score the coveted gig, according to E! News.

An insider says NFL bosses have also been considering Coldplay and Bruno Mars, who performed at the 2014 event, for the show, but Maroon 5 have emerged as favourites, despite recent reports suggesting Mars was primed for another Super Bowl showdown.

Katy Perry served as the headliner at the Super Bowl earlier this year (15), and shared the stage with Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliott, whose surprise appearance marked her much-anticipated return to music.

Perry's half-time show was the most-watched TV concert in history as 121 million viewers tuned into watch her 12-minute set. The impressive number is six million more than those who checked out Mars' half-time show performance last year.
