You’ve been hiding under a rock if you haven’t heard about radio station KVVF’s epic PR stunt. To announce the rebranding of the station as ‘Hot 105.7’ the station have been playing Nelly’s ‘Hot in Herre’ on repeat ever since 3pm on March 14th (can you imagine the royalties that guy is raking in right now?!).

The song originally came out in 2002 (man, that makes us feel old) on Nelly’s album Nellyville. Produced by Pharrell Williams and The Neptunes, the single uses a hook from Chuck Brown’s 1979 track “Bustin’ Loose”, as well as samples from Neil Young’s “There’s a World” and Nancy Sinatra’s “As Tears Go By” cover.

For those of us who were out and about on the club scene in the mid-00s, ‘Hot in Herre’ became a staple 2am sound, spurring most men on the dancefloor to rip off their T-shirts and wave them around over their heads (even those of them that should really have kept their shirts on). It also inevitably still leads to teams of girls screaming, “I am get-tin’ so hot, I’m gonna take ma clothes off!” before giggling and most likely not taking their clothes off.

For the song, Nelly won a Grammy for Best Male Rap Solo Performance back in 2003, while the song ranked number 38 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop in 2008. ‘Hot in Herre’ has been sampled and covered by several other artists, including EDM producer and DJ, Tiga, who remade the song with vocals by Jake Shears of the Scissor Sisters. “Weird Al” Yankovic parodied the song on the album Poodle Hat, instead calling it ‘Trash Day‘ and changing the lyrics of the chorus to, “There’s somethin‘ rotten here, you better hold your nose.” You know that your song has been a hit when people start making up their own versions of it! The song has also appeared in the movie Agent Cody Banks, as well as HBO mini-series Generation Kill. Nelly’s hit also popped up on Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide and has also been parodied by Chris Rock in the movie Head of State.

NellyNelly's Getting Hot In Here

However, our favourite of all ‘Hot in Herre’ versions has to be King Julien’s performance of the song in Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted. The Lord of the Lemurs energetically straddles an electricity cable, singing “I am getting so hot I want to take my fur off”.

‘Hot in Herre’ has certainly become an iconic song, perhaps becoming even more famous than Nelly himself!  Are you a fan of the song?
