Wednesday night (March 18th 2015) was a female fronted assault with fantastic sets from both US and UK bands at SXSW's legendary Hype Hotel Presented by Feed the Beat. The evening was a perfect example of why girl power is playing such an important role on modern music.

Getting the evening off to an unforgettable start was 22-year-old San Diego singer Ryn Weaver. Undoubtedly the talk of the night, Weaver poses something very different with her vivacious stage presence and distinctive pop vocal, bringing everyone to their feet with songs such as 'Promises', 'Sail On' and debut single 'OctaHate'. She even connected with her audience by sharing an anecdote about her late grandfather, who she describes as her 'muse'. Set to release her debut album 'The Fool' this summer, Weaver promises big things having already topped the US Heatseekers chart with her 2014 EP 'Promises'.

Next up, Best Coast presented a real rock 'n' roll vibe throughout their set, though being late on stage meant they were left with only ten minutes to cram a set in. Frontwoman Bethany Cosentino seemed sorry that the show would have to be cut short, but made up for it with dynamic renditions of 'California Nights' and 'The Only Place'. They ended on the spontaneous closer 'Boyfriend', which saw Cosentino drop some of her fierceness in favour of a softer, shyer performance - her guitar laying abandoned.

The UK's finest, Wolf Alice enjoyed another fun set with an energy that was somewhat extraordinary for such a new band, and subtle stage presence that shows great potential. The Londoners gained some well-deserved attention with their 2014 EP 'Creature Songs' and are currently working on their debut album 'My Love is Cool'.

Friday won't be a day to miss at Hype Hotel either, with the day bringing female singer/songwriters Lydia Ainsworth, Christine and the Queens and George Maple; Atlanta's Raury; London garage duo Gorgon City; and LA rapper IloveMakonnen. The evening will meanwhile bring together 19-year-old singer Kehlani, Michigan's Daniel Wilson, rapper Kari Faux, Swedish songwriter Seinabo Sey, BBC Sound of 2015 winners Years And Years and up and coming rap duo Rae Sremmurd.
