Sam Smith hasn't had a ''proper boyfriend'' yet.

The 'Stay With Me' hitmaker recently split from Jonathan Zeizel - who he met on the set of his music video for 'Like I Can' - and admits he ''made a mistake'' in getting the public ''involved'' too quickly.

Speaking of the split, he said: ''Nothing dramatic happened. I made a mistake by posting pictures of us on Instagram and making it seem more serious than it was. I flew him to Australia and we had a nice time...

''We just weren't very compatible, but I've learned that I need to hold off before I start getting the public involved.

''I would say it was a relationship, but I still feel like I haven't had a proper boyfriend yet.''

The 22-year-old singer thinks channelling his heartache into writing songs about his failed relationships is like ''therapy [and] closure'' but insists he won't try falling for a straight man again, after his previous crush scored him a chart-topping album and four Grammy awards.

He told the Evening Standard magazine: ''I've stopped falling for straight men now. After the last one, there's no way it's going to happen to me again. The record was therapy, closure, it saved me.

''I've written a song about another person recently.''
