The much-loved Wayne family butler will be getting a little more attention in the next season of 'Gotham'.
Those who are curious about finding out a little more in regards to the Wayne family butler, Alfred Pennyworth (Sean Pertwee) are in luck, as the actor who plays him has teased we'll be "indirectly" delving deeper into his backstory when 'Gotham' makes its return for a fourth season next month.
Sean Pertwee makes his return as Alfred Pennyworth in 'Gotham' season 4
Though we've seen figures from Alfred's past come to the series in episodes already gone by, and Alfred has on more than one occasion been able to prove his expertise when it comes to fighting, thanks to his time spent in the military, there's still a lot to explore when it comes to the actually very mysterious character's past.
A darkness has been hinted at throughout 'Gotham' to-date, but not very much has actually been revealed. It looks like that could all be about to change, however.
Speaking with Cinema Blend, Pertwee teased of the show's upcoming fourth season: "I think you’re going to find out indirectly about his past, and the person that he was. He’s not proud. He has more demons than Bruce has. And that’s why that’s why they’ve always inevitably sort of drawn together, and they find each other, and that relationship suffers as the young boy grows. Alfred tries to keep up with him, and he just can’t."
It's odd to imagine Alfred and Bruce losing their great relationship, with the butler taking in the youngster from his earlier years, following the murder of his parents Tom and Martha Wayne. Bruce is more of a surrogate son to the butler than somebody who uses him as staff, guiding him along the way and encouraging him to do something with his life, rather than wallowing in his sadness.
With revelations however come big consequences, so could something terrible in Alfred's past drive a wedge between him and the young billionaire boy? There are plenty of avenues that showrunners could go down with the character, so hopefully they'll choose one that sets the fan base alight with excitement.
